You need to get ready by your ‘staging date’. Setting up your auto-enrolment pension scheme can be a complex process and there are penalties and fines if you don’t achieve it by the scheduled government “staging” dates and do it correctly.

7 steps to Auto-Enrolment

Finally, a complete end to end solution. North West Auto-Enrolment does it all, from preparation to implementation.

1. Know your staging date

The date that the new law applies to your company is known as your staging date. This date is determined by the size of your largest PAYE scheme. Once you know your staging date you will need to provide contact details or nominate a contact for TPR [The Pensions Regulator.]

2. Assess Your Workforce

You will need to assess who in your workforce is an eligible jobholder. You must automatically enrol eligible jobholders into a qualifying pension scheme and make contributions on their behalf to that pension scheme. Following on are further administrative duties.

3. Review your pension

If you already have a scheme for your workers, you may be able to enrol all eligible jobholders into this scheme. If you don’t already have a scheme or it doesn’t qualify you will need to enrol them into a new pension scheme. There are a number of pension providers to choose from if you need to select a qualifying pension scheme.

4. Speak with your workers

Employers have a legal duty to provide information to all “workers”, individually in writing about the pension changes detailing how they personally are affected by the changes.This includes all your workers (except those aged under 16, or 75 or over), which can include fixed-term contract workers.

5. Automatically enrol

There is a process that employers will need to follow in order to make an eligible jobholder a member of an automatic enrolment pension scheme. Certain information about your eligible jobholders will need to be supplied to pension scheme managers at specific points in the process.

6. Register with the regulator

Shortly after your staging date you will need to register with The Pensions Regulator. You will be required to maintain specific records about enrolled workers, their status within the scheme, the payment of contributions and the qualifying scheme itself.

7. Make a contribution

After your staging date, you must contribute to your chosen pension scheme on behalf of your “workers”. The minimum contribution rates that an employer must pay into their worker’s pension scheme will be introduced gradually over a 6 year period (from 2012 to 2018).

Auto-Enrolment in Detail

The Government estimates that millions of people in the UK are currently not saving enough for their retirement. To encourage a retirement savings culture, the Government has introduced legislation that means every employer will have a duty to put a pension scheme in place. Auto Enrolment is a Government initiative stating that every employer must automatically enrol “workers” into a workplace pension scheme and make contributions on their behalf. All “workers” aged between 22 and the State Pension age, earning more than £10,000 a year and working within the UK will be automatically enrolled.

The introduction of automatic enrolment has already begun and affects every single employer in the UK over the coming months and years. The The Pensions Regulator will advise you , by letter, twelve to eighteen months in advance of your Staging Date. Once you know your Staging Date you are required to provide contact details to The Pensions Regulator, online by a specific deadline given in the letter. When your staging date arrives, you’ll be required by the new workplace pension reform to automatically enrol any eligible employees into a workplace pension scheme when you run payroll.

You may wish to obtain a report analysing the market for different providers. Whilst we can run and administer a scheme for you using NEST (the National Employment Savings Trust) which is the Government's own scheme, there are many larger insurance companies that will do the administration as part of their package. However, there are usually substantial set up and running fees, and a minimum level of contributions required per employee on the payroll.
